New patent for PEEK-based non-stick coatings

Through intensive and long-standing commitment to research and development, several protective coating systems have already been developed that reflect the technical know-how and high innovation potential of Rhenotherm. The new patent for non-stick coatings based on PEEK is also included.

Patented PEEK coatings from Rhenotherm

The patent relates to a special layer structure containing the high-performance plastic PEEK (polyetheretherketone), which is applied directly to the surface of the workpiece to be coated as a primer (adhesion promoter) or as a single layer. Thus, the patent refers to almost the entire PEEK product range of Rhenotherm.

Advantages of PEEK coatings

Compared to conventional non-stick coatings, Rhenotherm's PEEK systems stand out improved properties regarding scratch resistance, Temperature resistance, water vapor tightness and corrosion resistance out. In combination with fluoropolymers and possibly other additives, the PEEK binds excellently to the surface of the workpiece to be coated, so that the coating and substrate are very firmly connected. This achieves improved abrasion resistance compared to conventional fluoroplastic layers. Due to the high melting point of PEEK and the comparatively high hardness for a plastic, there is an extremely high scratch resistance even at elevated operating temperatures, which also at temperatures of more than 260°C remains.

Application examples

Non-stick coatings with PEEK are particularly suitable for the food, adhesive, rubber- and paint processing Manufacturing. Here, PEEK coatings are recommended above all for components or surface areas that are exposed to comparatively high temperatures and to which food, adhesives or molten plastics such as PE should not adhere.
