BMBF research project ZinCycle "Development of a raw material-optimized, recyclable and
rechargeable zinc-air battery for stationary use" Fkz: 03XP0493D

(Runtime: Sept. 2022 - Aug. 2025)

Together with a total of 8 partners (Eisenhuth GmbH & Co. KG; Grillo-Werke AG; VARTA
Microbattery GmbH; Accurec Recycling GmbH; EURA AG; University Duisburg-Essen; Westphalian
University; University of Bayreuth) the aim of this project is to develop a zinc-air battery
which can be used as stationary electricity storage. Zinc-air batteries offer the advantage that
a reactant can be taken from the ambient air. Besides, zinc is available as a raw material
much lighter and available in larger quantities than the raw materials of the widespread
Lithium Ion Battery. In addition to optimizing the zinc dissolution and deposition and the
bifunctional oxygen electrodes, another focus of the project is also on the
Recovery and recyclability of the input materials used.
